Being a Bone Marrow Donor

Following the previous post on the URGENT need to find a compatible bone marrow donor for Afonso, I use this opportunity to clarify some doubts about donating bone marrow.
The initial collection for the compatibility testing can be done without any type of surgery.
Compatibility test can be done through a simple blood sample. If the person is compatible with some patient in need, will be asked to her if still want to proceed and which method want to use. There are two methods to extract bone marrow material.
The best known, and oldest, it’s a minor surgical procedure with anesthesia, which is a small puncture to the pelvic bones to remove a portion of the bone marrow (the bone marrow is renewable, and can donate more than once). This process is what stops most of the people from becoming donors.
However, nowadays is another process that involves the collection of blood, without any surgical intervention. Let's say it will be similar process (do not start attacking me, I am using this only as an example) to hemodialysis, where blood leaves the body by one arm, passes through a machine that removes the cells that are required, and re-enters the body of the donor thru the other arm.
Before the collection the donor will have to take medication that stimulates the creation and concentration of cells needed for transplant.

Moreover, the donor may, at any time and without having to explain his reasons, refuse to donate.
